Down but not out!
Umpires: Two from oppo Sonning 0 – City of Oxford 2 When will we ever learn!
Once again we found ourselves a goal down in the first minute and then two down before half time. Both were as a result of penalty corners; the first being largely avoidable, caused by unforced errors and lack of concentration, straight from the whistle. To our credit we then get our act together, and prevented any more goals, in spite of continued pressure, and playing with 10 for much of the match, with Carol M struggling from injury. City of Oxford didn’t deserve the last place in the league and are now placed above us, as we share the relegation spot. They are inevitably faster and can change pace better than the Vets. Jill and Ruth were able to cut off some attacks, but City were quickly able to tackle back. Anji, Sharon and Fran had shots which were wide of the mark and others which were repulsed. After the initial disappointments, Sue, in goal, was heavily involved and did not falter. Carol J. moved back to the right defence, was effective, in her usual unorthodox way, with Debbie supporting her.
Injury is causing the Vets to try to re-establish some playing positions, so Sara was pushed up on the right, but we have yet to confirm the best strategies.
Jill Grindal.
