Could have, should have won!
Sonning Vets v Phoenix/Ranelagh 5th December 2009 Home 15.00 Team: S.Hicks, C.Miles, J.Grindal, S.Oldham, L.Weeks, K.Vive S. Egerton, D. Webb, F.Ford, R.Beasley, C.John, A.Higgins. J.Cook. Umpires: Oppo. + G.Strudley. Sonning 0 – Phoenix/Ranelagh This is one we could have won. To quote one of our forwards "the forwards lost us this game". Whilst I always demur from pointing any fingers, the forwards did have several good chances and failed to finish. On a least two occasions Anji seemed nervous of her good fortune to receive the ball in such an advantageous position, that she held it too long and then hit wide. Sharon unexpectedly topped her normal sure-fire corner shot on goal, and Fran and Carol J both had goal scoring chances. To be fair they were all participating in other aspects of the game, especially Carol J who was effective in mid field, as well as carrying and harassing the ball well forward on many occasions. The result did reflect the game, with Phoenix/Ranelagh having two or three very near misses covered by Sue, and a clearance by Sara which would have certainly hit the back board. Long passes were used extensively, by both teams, some more effective than others, with Jill, Karen and Ruth using their anticipation to pick up any loose balls in mid field. Carol M was restored to fitness sweeping up many final attacks, but Liz could only manage 10 minutes on her return after injury. Jules was a welcome visitor moving competently in several areas. Debbie stayed right mid field cutting off many a foray from the opposing left wing. On their showing yesterday Phoenix/Ranelagh do not seem to merit their 3rd position in the league, but nor do Sonning deserve the now joint relegation spot. Maidenhead next week, who share points, goal difference and, with the Vets, hold up the league table. Should be fun! Jill Grindal.
