Great performance in an exciting Quarter Final match
Sonning 2s v Kettering 2s
Sunday 7th February
2 - 3
Quarter Final of the Women's 2nd XI Knockout Trophy
We were absolutely delighted to have reached the final 8 of this competition in the first year that we have entered. Even though we won yesterday, Sonning begun the game nervously and this resulted in a lot of pressure from a very strong Kettering side but Rose made some excellent saves to keep us in the game.
Sonning had a full squad and it soon became clear that we were going to need every player to work really hard to make sure we had an impact on the match.
Unfortunately, Sonning conceded the first goal from a Kettering short corner. Sonning immediately reacted and picked up the pace and almost straightaway scored when AJ roofed a great goal into the Kettering net!
Both sides were now playing well and the game was flowing from end to end. Both sides managed to score again, making the score 2 - 2. The spectators for both teams were now fully engaged in this exciting match, which could have gone either way. Then Kettering were awarded a short corner, which they converted making the score 3 - 2. With one final push, Sonning kept their composure and managed to score, what we thought was, the equalising goal but unfortunately the umpire didn’t spot the defenders foot on the line that deflected the ball upwards and disallowed the goal. Unfortunately, we ran out of time and the final score was 3 - 2, with Kettering progressing onto the semi-finals.
The debrief was very positive, not least as Kettering play in a league roughly equivalent to 2 divisions higher than us.
It was a great game, well-supported and played in a great spirit. Kettering are a strong side and we wish them well in the next round.
